On 14 March 2023, the UK Medicines regulator approved an application to reclassify the erectile dysfunction medication Beppage (medikaterous drug) from prescription-only medical treatment to a PPI-only medicine. This application was refiled as Class C medicine on 14 September 2023 by the MHRA in response to the increased concern (see ), which has been reported in the media and on 11 Europe Union Medicines counter-balancing measures, that increased scrutiny of Pfizer’s patent on Beppage has led to generic medicines becoming less effective.
Class C medicine is a type of medicine called a phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitor. It works by relaxing blood vessels and increasing blood flow to the penis when a person is sexually stimulated. Beppage is a branded product made by Pfizer and is available to buy online from pharmacies in the UK.
Although Beppage is only approved to treat erectile dysfunction, it is also approved to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs) in adults and in children 12 years and over who have difficulty breathing or swallowing. It is also approved to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension in adults by the NHS for use in the treatment of all stages of life, including exercise.
Beppage is approved for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension in adults and children 12 years and over, and for the treatment of symptoms of Raynaud’s phenomenon in adults.
Beppage is also approved to treat erectile dysfunction by the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). According to current projections, the number of men aged 40 and over will continue to rise to 14 since the patent on Beppage is in class C medicine, likely to lead to generic medicines becoming less effective.
